Ant And Dec Make 'Mams' Proud With OBEs

The TV duo make the Queen's Birthday Honours List with an astronaut, actors, singers, sportsmen and a woman who designed signs.

07:50, UK,
Geordie duo Ant and Dec are used to receiving awards for their TV presenting work, but they say their OBEs will make their "mams" proudest of all.
After being included on the Queen's Birthday Honours list, alongside veteran singer Rod Stewart and British astronaut Tim Peake, the pair said: "We are just two ordinary lads from the west end of Newcastle.
Ant and Dec posted this photo on their Instagram account
"We hope us receiving this honour can inspire young people to chase their dreams and believe that anything is possible.
"This will definitely be the proudest our mams have ever been."
Ant and Dec (or Dec and Ant) carried on celebrating into the night...
Mr Peake was the first person to be given an honour while not even on the planet.
He was aboard the International Space Station (ISS) when he received the call informing him of his recommendation for Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.
Sending a message from the ISS, he said: "All of the training and preparation couldn't prepare me for looking down on our Earth from orbit.
"I am only one privileged person in a complex team of technicians, scientists, engineers, educators, trainers and flight directors, all working in pursuit of one of the greatest scientific and technical challenges of our time - exploring our Solar system for the benefit of people on Earth.
"This award is for them."
Stewart receives a knighthood for his services to music and charity, and he promised "Her Majesty" he would "wear it well".
"I've led a wonderful life and have had a tremendous career thanks to the generous support of the great British public," he said.
"This monumental honour has topped it off and I couldn't ask for anything more."
He announced the news to the crowd at his concert at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Friday night, saying: "your old mate is now Sir Rod."
"I spoke to Elton earlier today and he said isn't it funny two old queens from North London get a knighthood," he added.
The crowd chanted "Sir Rod, Sir Rod" as he came out for an encore.
Actor Brian Blessed receives an OBE, and Downton Abbey actress Penelope Wilton becomes a Dame for her services to drama, one of 13 women to be bestowed the honour.
Martine Wright lost both her legs in the 7/7 bombings. She became a sitting volleyball player and was part of Team GB for the London Paralympics.
Awarded an MBE, she told Sky News: "This award isn't just for me. It's for the people that have loved and supported me over the last 11 years and also all those people in Great Britain that realise the power of sport."
Women made up 47% of the recipients, with 538 being recognised, and the list also saw the greatest number of people - 90 - from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background to be honoured.
Seventy percent of the awards went to people who had undertaken outstanding work in or for their local community. Just under 10% are civil servants.
From the world of sport record-breaking England cricket captain Alastair Cook and former England football skipper Alan Shearer received CBEs for their services to cricket and charity, respectively.
Andy Murray's brother Jamie receives an OBE for services to tennis and charity.
"I was really honoured to receive this cool thing," he said. "I think the Davis Cup was obviously huge from a profile point of view. For me and for tennis in the UK in general I think it was able to capture a whole new audience."
Others receiving honours include a police hero who was stabbed in the neck as he served in the line of duty. Gary Etchells, a community support officer with Greater Manchester Police, gets an MBE for services to policing.
A woman who helped design the signage system for the UK road network has received an OBE. Margaret Calvert, 80, was responsible for many familiar roadside signs such as the 'children crossing' image.
And youth worker Jayne Senior whose revelations about child sexual exploitation in Rotherham led to the exposure of a scandal that shocked the nation has been awarded the MBE.
